Fried Wontons

You can stuff these with just about anything you like, but these are stuffed with beef, onion, cream cheese and seasonings.  They go great with any kind of stir fry, or just as appetizers with soy sauce, hot mustard, or sweet & sour sauce.  Easy to make, always a favorite, and never any leftovers!  Enjoy.

Fried Wontons with soy sauce and hot mustard on the side

Ingredients
½ tbl. Canola oil
1 tsp. sesame oil
¼ lb. lean ground beef
¼ cup minced onion
1 good dash of 5-spice powder
1 good dash garlic powder
1 good dash ground black pepper
4 tbl. low-fat cream cheese
1 tbl. cornstarch
1 or 2 tbl. water
1 package wonton skins
2 cups  Canola oil (for frying wontons)

Directions
·         Put the ½ tbl. of Canola oil and sesame oil into a large skillet
·         Add the ground beef and onion, and fry over medium heat for 6-7 minutes until beef is browned
·         Sprinkle with the 5-spice powder, garlic powder, and black pepper and cook and stir another 3 minutes
·         Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly
·         Add the cream cheese and mix well
·         In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water (you’ll use this to seal the edges of the wontons)
·         Add a small spoonful of the beef/cheese mixture to the center of each wonton skin
·         Using your fingers, smear the edges all the way around with the cornstarch mixture
·         Fold the wontons in half, corner-to-corner, and pinch the seams all the way around
·         Wrap the ends around your finger to form the wonton shape (see photograph)
·         Add the 2 cups of Canola oil to a frying pan (should be about 1 ½” deep) and heat oil to about 350°
·         Fry in the wontons in the oil for about 2 minutes, until golden brown, turning often
·         Remove to paper towels to drain, and allow to cool a bit before serving.  Serve with soy sauce, hot mustard, or sweet & sour sauce
